According to Gov.UK:

UK health authorities have classified Cape Verde as having a risk of Zika virus transmission. (first knowledge of this was in 2015, when it was classed as HIGH risk)

For more details on Zeka see link below which is listed on the Gov.UK site:
http://travelhealthpro.org.uk/country/4 ... ther_risks

In the majority of cases, Zika Virus infection is asymptomatic – persons do not exhibit symptoms. Those with symptoms usually get ill 3-12 days after being bitten by an infected mosquito. Symptoms include mild fever, headache, muscle and joint pain, nausea, vomiting, and general malaise.....

- In other words, serious illness from Zeka is rare:
To avoid mosquitos:
*wear light-coloured long trousers and long-sleeved blouses, shirts and socks.
*use mosquito nets, mosquito coils and air conditioning
*apply repellents throughout the day.
*take care of your immediate residencial environment, your house / flat in respect of waste and water pockets: Change all standing water accumulation in and around the household (flower vases, cisterns and siphons of sink, showers and toilets and, watering cans, mop bucket, gutters etc.) at least once a week.

There was also something on the Gov.uk site that talked about safety at night and risk of muggings and rapes - but when I've looked at what people have to say that live there or have visited many times - its seems as if the warnings are a bit OTT.

Obviously be vigilant...just as you would anywhere you don't know.....
